That is the real question of the century, we live in time filled with so many technological advancements that we have been clouded to the fact of how selfish we have been living. When did we ever think that putting our waste into landfill sites was okay? When last did you stop to look back at the trail of pollution that you leave behind each day?
Sustainability, in general terms, is the ability to maintain balance of a certain process or state in any system. It is now most frequently used in connection with biological and human systems. In an ecological context, sustainability can be defined as the ability of an ecosystem to maintain ecological processes, functions, biodiversity and productivity into the future without the decay or deterioration of any of the systems as well.
Sustainability has become a complex term that can be applied to almost every system on Earth, particularly the many different levels of biological organization, such as; wetlands, prairies and forests and is expressed in human organization concepts, such as; eco-municipalities, sustainable cities, and human activities and disciplines, such as; sustainable agriculture, sustainable architecture and renewable energy.
For humans to live sustainably, the Earth's resources must be used at a rate at which they can be replenished. However, there is now clear scientific evidence that humanity is living unsustainably, and that an unprecedented collective effort is needed to return human use of natural resources to within sustainable limits.
The ecological footprint is a measure of human demand on the Earth's ecosystems. It compares human demand with planet Earth's ecological capacity to regenerate. It represents the amount of biologically productive land and sea area needed to regenerate the resources our human population consumes and to absorb and render harmless the corresponding waste generated by us. Using this assessment, it is possible to estimate how much of the Earth or Earths it would take to support humanity if everybody lived a given lifestyle. Humanity's total ecological footprint was estimated at close to 2 (two) planet Earths - in other words, humanity uses ecological services almost twice as fast as Earth can renew them. Which brings us back to the initial point of sustainability, if we carry on the way we going soon all the goodness the Earth has to offer us will be consumed
The idea of human sustainability has become increasingly associated with the integration of economic, social and environmental spheres. The World Commission on Environment and Development articulated what has now become a widely accepted definition of sustainability: “to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
